It is specified in the Torah that a fast should be observed from the evening of the 9th of Tishrei before sunset, until the evening of the 10th of Tishrei after sunset.
It is forbidden to fast on the day before Yom Kippur , and it is even considered a Mitzvah to have a good meal on that day, to gather enough strength before the fast.
At the end of Yom Kippur, the Shofar will be heard, to mark the conclusion of the fast.
After Yom Kippur, one should start building a sukka, to prepare for the holiday of Sukkot, a mere 4 days later.
