Welcome to this website

Jews have been living in Algeria since the Antiquity, and have been a non negligible constant in the country until the independence of Algeria from its French ruler in 1962. From the Atlas Mountains to the oasis in the Desert, from peddlers to advisors, Jews in Algeria were as shaped by the country as they helped shape it.
When they left Algeria in 1962, more than 90 % of them went to France, where they were full citizens.
Today, although they represent an important part of the French Sephardic Jews, their specific history, rites, traditions and cuisine are usually not well known by the other French Jews, let alone people from other parts of the world, especially America and Australia.
I created this website to better describe this history and these traditions. The history from my own family is taken as an example to illustrate each period of the history of the Jews of Algeria.
Another part of this website focuses on their specific rites and traditions for each Jewish holiday, even with some songs and prayers from my family available in audio files.
Last but not least, a third part of this web site highlights some traditional recipes, again for each Jewish holiday, of the Jews of Algeria. These recipes, passed down from generations to generations, are still served in most of French Algerian Jewish family, and are the foundation of their cuisine. Since 1962 though, Jews from Algeria have fully integrated French society and their cuisine reflects this integration, by adding not only recipes from others French Jews, but also from French Cuisine (with a kosher twist, of course).
